IKO UWAIS, THE BIOGRAPHY AND SOME SURPRISING FACTS

Iko Uwais, is an Indonesian actor who has gained success in Hollywood. He is known for starring in some actions movies, Merantau (2009), The Raid (2011), The Raid 2 (2014), and a brief role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). 

Iko Uwais was born as Uwais Qorny in Jakarta on February 12th, 1983 to Mustapha Kamaluddin and Maisyaroh. Raised in Betawi (native Jakartan) family, Iko Uwais has learned Silat since he was 10 years old in his uncle’s Silat School. In 2005, he won a national Silat competition as The Best Silat Athlete. 

Two years later, in 2007, Iko was discovered by a Welsh film director, Gareth Evans who came to his school to film a documentary about Silat. Iko’s performance has drawn Gareth’s attention to cast him as a leading role in his movie, Merantau (2009). Signing a contract with Gareth, Iko resigned from his job as an operational driver in ESIA, A telecommunication company. In 2011, he collaborated the second time with Gareth in The Raid, which is more popular as The Raid: Redemption in the US. The collaboration continued in the Raid 2 released in 2014. Iko also appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). 

In 2016, Iko starred as Ishmael in Headshot, a film directed by Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto, which was nominated The Grand Prix Nouveau Genre Award in L'etrange Festival Paris 2016 for International Feature Film category. 

These are some surprising facts about Iko Uwais:

1. Iko is Betawi (native Jakartan). However, many people think that he is a Minang (native West Sumateran) because of his role in Merantau, which was set in West Sumateran.
2. He was once a footballer in a local club in Jakarta.
3. He has a phobia to Kerupuk Putih, a white food snack from Indonesia.
4. He was an operational driver in ESIA, A telecommunication company.
