ANGELINA JOLIE, AN OSCAR WINNING ACTREES AND HUMANITARIAN

Angelina Jolie Voight, best known as Angelina Jolie is an American Oscar winning actress, filmmaker and humanitarian. She was born on June 4, 1975, to actress Marcheline Bertrand and actor Jon Voight. She has a brother named James Haven. 

After her parents’ separation in 1976, Jolie lived with her mother, who decided to quit her career as an actress in order to focus raising her kids. Admiring her mom’s acting talent and getting inspired by her mom’s films, Jolie decided to explore more about acting.  

When she was a teenager, Jolie appeared like a nerd, wearing glasses and brace. She struggled with insomnia and eating disorder and experimented with drugs. She also self-harmed because she found it difficult to connect emotionally with other people. She even planned to commit suicide at the age of 19 and 22. After adopting her first kid, Maddox, Jolie found her life more stable and promised herself she would never be self-destructive again. 

The relationship between her and her father didn’t run well because Voight left the family when Jolie was less than a year old. They tried to improve their relationship, especially when they worked together in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), in which Jolie starred Lara Croft, but it even deteriorated. In 2002, Jolie petitioned the court to remove her father’s name, Voight, from her last name and the change was approved in September the same year. 

Regarding her career as an actress, Angelina Jolie started to gain worldwide fame after she earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film through her role in "George Wallace" (1997). Despite her acting abilities, Jolie had rarely found her films appealing to a wide audience but Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) is another thing. The film has made her an international superstar and earned $274.7 million. Her acting career has become more prominent after she achieved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Girl, Interrupted" (1999). In 2005, Jolie gained another international success playing in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Her biggest success came with the fantasy picture Maleficent in 2014. 

Not only noted for her acting career, Jolie is also known for her humanitarian efforts. She promotes conservation, education as well as women’s rights. She is also an advocate on behalf of refugees for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Because of her concern to humanity, she has been honoured a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and an honorary damehood of the Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG). 

Angelina Jolie married her first husband Jonny Lee Miller in 1996, three months before she turned 21. Their marriage lasted only for three years. She met her second husband Billy Bob Thornton in 1999. They married a year later and got separated in 2003. Divorced from Miller and Thornton, Jolie lived together with Brad Pitt for over ten years before they finally decided to get married in 2014. In 2016, she filed for divorce from Brad Pitt because they disagreed on so many things, including their lifestyle, Jolie concerns more on humanitarian effort while Pitt enjoys being Hollywood’s golden boy, and on how to raise their kids.
